Sparkler Cookies!

We first tried out this cookie recipe last year and it has been a family favorite ever since.   I love that you can easily adapt it to whatever the current holiday colors are and have a quick festive treat.  It is also a terrific recipe to have the munchkins help with!  (However I should note that this does tend to mean less pictures are taken.  When I went to grab the picts. from last years batch I found we were missing several.  😦  I hoped to make a new batch and grab them but . . . no go so maybe I will add them later)

I found this recipe HERE at Mom on Time Out

Sparkler Cookies

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 tsp. vanilla extract (could use almond instead but we haven’t tried it)
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • colored sugar

  1. Cream butter and sugar together
  2. Add egg & 3/4 tsp. vanilla extract and mix until well combined
  3. Stir in flour, mixing until fully incorporated.

  4. Divide dough in half
  5. cover cutting board with plastic wrap and press out 1/2 of dough into an 8×8 square
  6. Sprinkle the sugars onto the dough (rows, patches, whatever floats your boat)
  7. Use the plastic wrap to lift and roll up dough (like sushi)
  8. Repeat with 2nd half of dough
  9. Refrigerate dough rolls for 1-2 hours until nice and firm.
  10. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  11. Line baking sheet with parchment paper
  12. Remove plastic wrap from rolls and cut into 1/4 inch slices
  13. Place slices about 2 inches apart on cookie sheet
  14. Bake 6-8 minutes or until the edges just turn golden. (We actually prefer ours with just a hint of gold starting so they stay a little softer)
  15. Let cool for 1-2 minutes before removing to wire rack
